Over last 20 years, I don’t know how many times I’ve heard someone say this to me!
I love my job too, however it is a lot more than just looking round houses all day.
Showing buyers round property and valuing them for sale is just one small part, a lot of our day to day time is spent following up viewings for feedback and negotiating offers.
The most crucial skill though is progressing the sale through to completion.
People skills are vital at this stage as emotions often run high and it is important keeping the lines of communication open. Feedback from both buyers and sellers show this is the area of our expertise they appreciate the most – it is also the unknown aspect to the job from public perception.
Face-to-face contact, regular updates and chasing all help to keep things running smoothly.
We are out showing buyers property in all weathers and, given where we are based, it can be raining sideways quite often. We work evenings and weekends, we meet people that are desperate to move, people that don’t want to move and those that are forced to.
Some sellers have palaces and there are those with more modest dwellings – every client is the same in our eyes, and every property is someone’s castle.
A good estate agent has many strings to their bow – from giving house styling advice to mediating and negotiating through to marriage counsellor and even emergency locksmith.
Every day is different, every client is different and every property is different – that is why I love my job.
