Located to the west of Kendal, the Lyth Valley is quiet and unspoilt with numerous small villages and hamlets including Brigsteer, Crosthwaite, Levens and Underbarrow.
The word ‘Lyth’ originates from the Norse ‘hlith’ meaning sloping hillside and the valley edges are defined by the two magnificent limestone escarpments, Whitbarrow Scar and Scout Scar, views from which take in the Lakeland Fells and Morecambe Bay Estuary.
Encompassing the villages of Crosthwaite, Underbarrow, Brigsteer and Levens to the west of the valley and the small hamlets of The Row and The Howe to the east, the Lyth Valley has become popular with families and those retiring to the Lake District.
Famous for the damson blossom in early spring, the valley is dotted with ancient orchards with organised walks available to take in the best viewpoints and the yearly Damson Day local fete which celebrates all things damson.
A strong community spirit binds the small villages together. There are numerous gastro pub style eateries – some award winning, and restaurants to suit all needs. A village shop still flourishes in Levens, community post offices and halls are available and there is an ever expanding primary school in both Levens and Crosthwaite.
The villages have good access to the A590 for travel further field and Kendal can be easily reached over Scout Scar.
