What's it like to live in the South Lakes and North Lancashire?

Arnside, Sandside and Storth

The pretty South Lakeland village of Arnside enjoys wonderful panoramic views across the estuary of the River Kent and northern reaches of Morecambe Bay towards Grange-over-Sands and the fells of the Lake District. Arnside and outlying area fall within the Arnside & Silverdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with sites of scientific interest found around the limestone pavements, ancient woodlands, wildflower meadows and coastline.

Carnforth

The market town of Carnforth, just five miles north of Lancaster and Morecambe, is perhaps best-known to people from outside of the region as the location for the 1945 classic romantic movie, Brief Encounter. The A6 passes through the heart of the town and junction 35 of the M6 is just a few minutes away, providing excellent road links to both the north and south making Carnforth a manageable commute to Kendal and the South Lakes, Lancaster or Preston.

Endmoor, Low Park, Summerlands and Crooklands

Endmoor is a small village located approximately 5 miles to the south of Kendal, with the hamlets of Low Park, Summerlands, Gatebeck and Crooklands either side. Endmoor has a vibrant community with a pub, bakery and village hall along with a tennis club, bowling club, park and playing fields. Gatebeck and Summerlands also have small trading estates, with a sizeable hotel with bar and restaurant at Crooklands.

Grange-over-Sands and the Cartmel Peninsula

Situated on the western shores of Morecambe Bay, Grange-over-Sands is very much the epitome of Edwardian and Victorian seaside resorts, with seafront promenade, quaint parks (complete with duck pond in the Ornamental Gardens and bandstand in Park Road Gardens), striking period houses and shopping arcades.

It’s sheltered proximity helps Grange enjoy a micro-climate that’s generally a few degrees warmer than inland and further towards the Lakes, a fact which undoubtedly contributes to the town being such a popular choice for older residents.

Heversham, Leasgill and Hincaster

Passing Levens Hall from Kendal direction, turn left off Princes Way and you arrive in the historic hamlet of Leasgill. Once part of the Eversley Estate, owned by the Argles family who built a family home there in 1859.

Through the years many of the original shops and workshops have been converted into dwellings, as has the grammar school which was founded in 1613. This has since been re-sited to Heversham and was formerly the Heversham Grammar School but now part of Dallam secondary school.

Kendal

Kendal is located easily from junction 36 or 37 of the M6 motorway and 50 miles South of Carlisle. Its buildings, mostly constructed with the local grey limestone, have earned it the nickname “the Auld Grey Town” and is also home to Kendal Castle, the former residence of Katherine Parr.

The town centre boasts a range of cafes, restaurants, shops, banks as well as being home to the renowned Brewery Arts Centre with its cultural art, music and theatre productions.
