Heversham and Leasgill

Heading just under a mile north on the A6 from Milnthorpe, the charming village of Heversham is the next conurbation you will reach.

Heversham is steeped in history with many Grade II listed buildings including the impressive St Peter’s Church which can date its origins back to the 8th Century. Heversham sits in an elevated position overlooking Milnthorpe Marsh where the River Kent flows into Morecambe Bay, with a number of properties also enjoying views towards Whitbarrow Scar and the southern Lakeland Fells.

Heversham Primary School sadly closed in 2017, with Milnthorpe Primary School and Levens CE Primary School now the closest to the village and both just a short drive away. Heversham Grammar School was founded in 1613 and was amalgamated with Dallam School, Milnthorpe, in 1984 with the Heversham campus becoming boarding for pupils and the 6th form college.

The hamlet of Leasgill is practically adjoined to Heversham and is just a little further north and features a village hall (called ‘the Athenaeum’) for the two villages and a bowling green. The historic house of Levens Hall is a few minutes’ walk away, with fantastic topiary gardens famed around the world.

There is an abundance of walks from both Leasgill and Heversham including Heversham Head the steep hill behind the villages which can be accessed from a variety of routes and is a place to go to admire and identify the fine views of the Lake District Fells and the Kent Estuary coastline from the feature monument erected over the time capsule in 2000.

These villages are benefit from their quiet rural location yet are close to Milnthorpe and Kendal, good access to the A6 and M6 motorway as well as being just a short distance from Oxenholme and the West Coast Main Line railway station.
